A platinum-gold ceramic crown is the premium version of classic metal-ceramic prosthetics. Instead of a standard chrome-cobalt alloy, the core is made of noble metals (gold 75–80%, platinum, palladium). This material has long been considered the international gold standard of prosthetics and is mainly used for demanding patients in Europe and the USA. Main advantages over classic PFM: first, perfect biocompatibility — eliminating all metal allergies (nickel, chrome) and potential systemic reactions; second, the warm colour of gold creates a more natural and vital tooth appearance under porcelain, especially in the anterior zone; third, no dark line forms at the gum margin as it sometimes does with classic PFM; fourth, the alloy's elasticity and oxidation resistance ensure long-term stability; fifth, the alloy sits more gently on the gum and does not provoke inflammation in adjacent soft tissues. The treatment protocol is the same as for standard metal-ceramic crowns, but laboratory alloy costs are significantly higher. Certified alloys (Bego, Heraeus) are used.
