A retainer is an essential appliance used after orthodontic treatment to lock the teeth in their new position. This stage is a critical part of orthodontic treatment — without a retainer, teeth gradually tend to return to their old position (relapse). BadamDent offers two main retainer types: 1) Fixed retainer (Bonded retainer) — a thin orthodontic wire is bonded to the lingual surface of teeth between the lower and upper canines. Invisible and unfelt by the patient, it works 24/7. The ideal choice because nothing is required from the patient. Downside: hygiene is slightly trickier and a special floss (Super Floss) is needed; 2) Removable retainer — comes in two types: a Hawley retainer (acrylic base + front wire, the classic method) and an Essix retainer (a clear plastic tray that fully covers the teeth — similar to Invisalign). A removable retainer is worn at night and removed during the day. Each version has its own recommended wear protocol. Retention phase: full-day wear for the first 6 months (removed only for meals and brushing), then night-only wear for 1–2 years, then 2–3 nights per week for life (as a safety net). This protocol is the lifelong guarantee of orthodontic success. The retainer needs regular check-ups — if a fixed retainer wire detaches or a removable one deforms, the patient should contact the dentist immediately.
