Pediatric Tooth Extraction

Pediatric Tooth Extraction

Pediatric tooth extraction is a rare but sometimes necessary procedure in children's dentistry. Reasons include: the natural exfoliation time has passed while the permanent tooth is pushing through, deep caries beyond restoration, deep pulpitis or periodontitis, fracture due to trauma, creating space for orthodontic treatment or focal infection. Baby-tooth extraction differs from adult extraction in several important ways: the root of a primary tooth is thinner, the bone is softer and the permanent tooth bud is below — so the extraction must be performed with great care using special instruments. Pediatric extraction protocol at BadamDent: a detailed conversation with the child and parents first, with the procedure explained via Tell-Show-Do. The gum is then numbed with a sweet-flavoured topical anaesthetic — making the subsequent injection painless. Local anaesthesia is delivered with a fine needle. Slim luxators and forceps appropriate for baby teeth are used, and the tooth is extracted with gentle movements. The wound is closed with minimal trauma (when needed). After extraction, parents receive detailed written instructions. A space maintainer is often placed — a small appliance that prevents neighbouring teeth from drifting into the empty space and avoids future space loss for the permanent tooth. Healing is rapid, 3–5 days. The whole process is conducted as atraumatically as possible for the child. After extraction the child is given a reward.
