Scaling is the professional removal of hardened tartar (calculus) from the tooth surface and below the gum line using an ultrasonic device (Cavitron, EMS, Woodpecker). Tartar forms when bacterial biofilm mineralises and cannot be removed by ordinary brushing. These deposits are the main cause of gum inflammation (gingivitis and periodontitis), bleeding gums, bad breath (halitosis) and eventual tooth loss. Beyond that, through the bloodstream they negatively influence the body's overall inflammatory background. At BadamDent the scaling process goes as follows: the dentist first examines the oral cavity, then an ultrasonic tip cleans all tooth surfaces and the subgingival area with simultaneous water irrigation. The procedure is painless — only vibration is felt. Local anaesthesia can be used for sensitive patients. The enamel is not damaged. After scaling we always recommend an Airflow polish and, if needed, remineralisation. The whole package takes 45–60 minutes. Gums return to their natural pink colour, bleeding stops and teeth regain their true shade. A preventive scaling is recommended every 6 months. It is the simplest, most effective and most often overlooked step in oral hygiene.
