Fiber Post

Fiber Post

A fiber post is a modern endodontic anchor used to reliably rebuild severely damaged teeth after root canal treatment, especially when less than 50% of the crown remains. The most popular brands are RelyX Fiber Post (3M), Tenax, Reforpost and ParaPost. The material is a polymer composite matrix reinforced with glass fibres. Unlike classic metal posts, fiber posts have an elastic modulus (Young's modulus ~18 GPa) very close to natural dentin — this distributes chewing forces in harmony with the tooth's bony structure and dramatically reduces the risk of root fracture. With metal posts this risk is high and usually ends in tooth loss. Fiber posts are semi-translucent and do not create the grey metallic shadow under an aesthetic crown in the front-tooth zone. Placement protocol: after root canal treatment, a dedicated drill prepares the coronal two thirds of the canal, a dual-cure adhesive system is applied, composite cement is injected into the canal, the post is seated and light-cured. A composite core is then built up and either a direct composite restoration or a ceramic crown is placed on top. The whole process is completed in one 60–90 minute visit. This is the most reliable way to keep a tooth long-term after endodontic treatment; when properly made it serves trouble-free for 15+ years.
